Tiger Woods Was Never A Role Model
Tiger Woods never said he was a role model. Not once did I ever hear him say "I am the role model for all of America’s youth." Not once did I get a phone call from him saying: "I am now the role model for your kids." We ordained him a role model. Just like we did Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan and all the others.
We are the ones who should be looking in the mirror and searching our souls about his failings as a role model, not Tiger Woods. We are the ones who should be asking ourselves why we have become so lazy and so self-centered as to allow some guy who most of us have never met to take over the title of role model for our children.
I have children. I refused to give the duty of being a role model up to some guy I never met, and whose only presence in my house was an electronic image on an electronic box. I have helped children who were not my own as well. Children who needed a real, living, breathing role model instead of a Corporation-created cardboard cutout of one.
Here’s the deal: If you want to slam Tiger Woods because he is a degenerate womanizer, go ahead.
But don’t try to lay the fact that you gave up your duties as role model at his door.
You own that one.
We all own that one.
